Please send us an update about your life...we will post it here in alphabetical order by 1963 name! Home Bios A-E Bios M-S Bios T-Z Richard M. (Rick) Flynn, P. O. Box 30267, Spokane, WA 99223-3004 rfspokane@comcast.net As graduation day 1963 approached, my college plans for attending Oregon State were unexpectedly derailed. In retrospect, that probably was a fortuitous event, as I later realized that I very likely would have joined the ranks of the Beaver ‘Freshman Flunk-outs’, anyway; I had, essentially, zero study skills at that point! I was employed at that time in the Oregon Food Stores (Later a Mayfair Market, and then Sherm’s Thunderbird, I believe) bakery on Shasta Way, so I moved into an informal apprentice baker’s program with them. It took only a few months for me to realize that this was likely not to be my career path, so I did the next ‘logical’ thing…I joined the Marine Corps in October of 1963! (Apparently, my budding ‘logic’ skills needed a bit more work!) The Marine Corps’ various training activities were very effective at reprogramming minds and bodies…even managing to teach me how to study! In addition to being trained in basic war-fighting skills, I was given extensive training in electronics, specializing in ground radar (troop surveillance radar - called a ‘People Finder’) and counter-battery radar (for tracking [usually] incoming mortar and artillery projectiles, in order to identify enemy firing locations for retaliatory strikes). I served in both the 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions at various times. My last duty assignment was in Vietnam, where I worked out of the Chu Lai Marine Corps Enclave, in the “I” Corps Tactical Zone. I returned to the U.S. from that assignment at the end of my thirteen month overseas ‘tour’, which also coincided with the completion of my three-year enlistment. I was discharged from active duty with the rank of sergeant. Upon returning to KFalls in October 1966, I wandered out to Weyerhaeuser, where I was hired and worked pulling lumber from the ‘dry chain’ in the Box Factory. It only took me about seven months to decide that I really needed to find work more matched to my interests and training, but I was grateful for the job while I was at Weyco. I worked as a radio and television repairman for B & B Radio and Electric for approximately five years, while attending Oregon Tech full-or-part-time, depending upon my budget. I was recruited by a former OIT classmate in 1972 to go to work in the [two-man] Woods Radio Shop for Weyerhaeuser’s Eastern Oregon Region. I worked for Weyco at that job for almost ten years, until the 1981-82 downsizing frenzy took place – approximately 50% of 2500 total jobs disappeared from the Eastern Oregon Region during that period, mine among them. I was married to Steffanie (KU ’67) in 1975, while I was still at Weyerhaeuser. Steffanie brought a five-year-old little girl into my life with our marriage. This child, Michelle, instantly became a ‘light of my life’! Our son Chris was born in 1978 – another ‘light of my life’! These two kids make me wish I had had more children – what a joy they have been to me. They are healthy, happy, have wonderful families…and they always laugh at my jokes! They even wait [patiently, sometimes] until I can remember the punch lines! What more could a dad ask from his children? After my Weyerhaeuser job went away, I spent the next year or so completing my on-again, off-again, electronics education at OIT, graduating (finally!) with an Assoc. in Engineering degree in Electronics Engineering Technology…and with a senior class-standing! (Something about dropping out of so many course catalogs over the years caused that mismatch – it only took me fifteen, or so, years to get to that point!) Upon graduation in 1983, and after cramming in some additional accounting courses during the following summer, I was hired by Pacific Gas Transmission (PGT) to work out of their Klamath Falls Maintenance Base. I worked for PGT as a bargaining unit (Union) ‘technician’ (for communications and controls work on a highly-automated natural gas pipeline system) out of the KFalls Maintenance Base. In April of 1988, I accepted a transfer to the company’s Spokane (WA) Headquarters, where I made the transition into management as a Gas Control Operator, and later, as a Gas Transportation Coordinator. My family joined me in Spokane after the 1987-88 school year ended, as Michelle was graduating from Mazama H.S. that spring, and on her way to U of O in Eugene, afterwards. I experienced a heart attack in 1992, followed by bypass surgery, and then a second heart attack nine months after the surgery, by which time several of the recent bypass grafts had failed. I returned to the bargaining unit as a technician in the Spokane office in 1994, when the Gas Control and Gas Transportation groups were relocated to Portland, Oregon. In the midst of my ‘adventures of the heart’, Steffanie and I were divorced. I have not remarried. After a very enjoyable [mostly] electronics career spanning more than four decades, I was medically ‘retired’ from PGT (which is now called TransCanada/GTN System) in 2005. I spend my time these days in anticipation of visits by my children and their families, all of whom live in the Puget Sound area. Two kids, three granddaughters (with one more granddaughter ‘scheduled’ to be born around August 28), and four granddogs, have blessed my life! So far, all, or most of the gang (including one pair of granddogs!) manage to make the trip to Spokane several times a year. I keep myself occupied in between granddog visits by trying to learn the art and skills of wooden musical-instrument-building (guitars, ukuleles, mandolins, violins). I took up this hobby for relaxation! Who knew that muttering at my work and throwing pieces of wood around [in frustration] might be relaxing?! I also put up a regular, if token, resistance to the quail, squirrels, and weeds, which collectively seem determined to reclaim my yard as their own! I play ‘at’ several musical instruments, although I never expect to become proficient with any of them. I still play the same violin that I played from grade school through high school. I don’t, however, play it as well as I once did! I am still an Amateur Radio Operator, although I’m not as active as I once was. I also dabble in computers, electronics, and robotics - as a hobbyist, only, these days. For the slow times, I have extensive book, DVD, and CD collections. I have more guitars than one man should be allowed to own – another product of having no ‘adult supervision’ in my life these days, I suppose! With the exception of the visits by my kids and their families, I am, for the most part, an ‘e-hermit’ these days. I am prevented from becoming a true ‘hermit’ only by my e-mail and Internet acquaintances, who won’t allow me to become a genuine hermit. I also really don’t like me in a beard, so becoming a stereotypical hermit was out, anyway! Do any of you remember when the carnivals used to set up just south of the old Safeway store at Shasta Way and South Sixth Street? I, for some unknown reason, remember one of the booths where you could throw a ball at some sort of target – to win a kewpie doll, or something equally valuable! I had purchased a double (or triple) load of balls, and I remember (as clear as if it were yesterday) asking the ‘carny’ running the booth if I was guaranteed any prizes because I had bought so many chances/balls. The guy looked down at me and said to me…“Kid…this is just like real life! Ya pays yer money…and ya takes yer chances, just like anyone else…there ain’t no guarantees of nuthin’ in this life”! I’m beginning to realize what the ‘carny’ meant by that! It has been quite a ride, though! I wish you all good health, much happiness…and, of course…prosperity! Ginny Fredricks Randle After leaving KU, along with many of my friends, we went off to the U of O and had rather a good time. At the end of it, I met an Englishman and after graduation, we were married. Not long after that, we moved to England and since then, I have had the most wonderful opportunities to see lots of our world, mainly Europe, of course. We had 3 sons, who are now married with children so grandchildren are a big part of our life. When the children were older, I went back to work and found myself in the financial services industry. With London being a major seat of this industry, it was very interesting work. Before long, as I had become very involved in computers, I became the webwriter for our company (a global company) and wrote websites for all the regions except the USA. It was more fun than work but even so, when the opportunity to take retirement came along, I jumped at it and have been enjoying the frenetic life of being retired ever since. We travel quite a bit, especially with my KF family living on the West Coast and one son living in New York State. There must be nomad in our blood because we seem to be on the move as much as possible, having been to the Middle East, China, Africa, Europe and of course, the States. Never a dull moment! Ken Galloway 2520 Montello, Hood River, OR 97031, (H) 541-386-4081, (C) 541-490-6680 email: kengalloway@gorge.net Because of family, work or other conflicts I have made only the 10 year reunion, when Moore Park caught on fire. Thanks for the information and will do my best to set September aside the 50 year reunion. After high school graduation, I went to Southern Oregon College for almost two years (5 terms) and was working for Weyerhaeuser Co. during the summers and winters; Nyback’s Florist during holidays. While making some money to go back to school I was drafted in August 1965; left for the 1st Cavalry Division in An Khe, Vietnam in July 1966 and returned home in late July 1967. I was a Medical Equipment Repairman responsible to keep the medical equipment for over ten hospitals running. I did get a Purple Heart that kept me out of the LZ’s for about a week. Came back and went one year to SOC then transferred to OSU and graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science in Forest Management. Worked for Weyerhaeuser Co. for almost five years in Coos Bay; took a new job as Forest Manager for Hood River County in 1974. I retired in March of 2004 after almost 30 years. I met my wife Judy at a SOC dance and we started dating and got married in November 1969. She is a 1965 graduate of Medford. She attended Oregon, SOC and graduated from OSU in 1977 (I think). She has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. We have five children; Wayne married and living in Ferndale, WA; Anne, married and living in LaPorte, CO; Karen, married and living in Bend, OR; Leslie, married and moving from Gallup, NM to Oregon City, OR; and Grant, married and living in Jackson, WY. Judy and I put a lot of miles on the car to visit the children. We are also blessed with currently 16 grandchildren with the 17th due to Leslie the end of August 2008. Judy started a Computer Graphics Design Corporation in 1990, and we have maintained the financial books, personnel records and purchased equipment. We are close to closing down the company so we can continue our travels. Judy and I are very active in the Barbershop Quartet and Chorus Singing with her in Sweet Adeline’s International singing currently in three choruses and active on the regional management teams. I am active in the Evergreen District Barbershop Harmony Society as a District Officer (EVP), member of the international faculty staff and a member of the international Contest & Judging Cadre. We both do stay very busy traveling to contests, meetings, schools, and of course visiting the children. Judy and I are also both active in the Lutheran Church and both have lost both of our parents, so we are now the older ones the family looks to. Charles and his wife (KUHS Grads of 1965) retired from the Corps of Engineers and he is now working in Boise, ID. Wish everyone well, and will try and to see if we can make it down in five years. Not too many reasons to travel in the Klamath Falls direction now. Not too many people that I remember now, so I look forward to the Memory Book. Have a great time. Cheers to all. Darlene Gentry Clawson dkclawson@bendcable.com After graduating from KU I attended Shasta Junior College in Redding, California, graduating with an A.A. Degree in June 1966. During this time I met my husband, Ron Clawson, and we were married June 18, 1966. We lived in Yreka, California; Ashland and Monmouth while he acquired his teaching degree; John Day; and moved to Bend in 1975 where we've been ever since. In 1974 our first daughter, Cami, was born, and our 2nd daughter, Mindy, arrived in 1978. Cami, lives in Portland and is an interior designer for Ethan Allen Furniture; Mindy is married to Chet Elliott and works at the Sisters Academy in Bend as a lead case manager. It is great to have both girls nearby after Cami had recently spent 3 years living in Texas. They bring great joy to my life. I have worked as a secretary/office manager for my entire career, working from 1967-73 at Southern Oregon College and Oregon College of Education (their former names). I worked for the Bend-LaPine School District 1980-2003 as an Office Manager at three different elementary schools, retired in 2003 and was widowed in 2004. Now that I'm retired I keep busy volunteering as one of two Art Vendor Coordinators for the Bend Summer and Fall Festivals sponsored by C3 Events and held in downtown Bend each year. It's been a great opportunity to meet interesting people and I enjoy the community involvement. I also am active in a ladies' social sorority, a Red Hat club, and volunteering for the Red Cross. I love to travel and make a yearly trip to Mexico (Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco and Playa del Carmen in March 2009) for 2 weeks in addition to vacationing in Palm Springs and Mesa, Arizona, each year. High point of this year was a 19-day Elderhostel tour of the Greek Islands with my old friend/classmate, LeeAnn Williams Newlan. What a great time we had! Chrissy Graham Stotler My phone number is 831-375-8950. Hello to all my "Class of '63 friends!" It is rather hard to cover the last 45 years of my life in a short space, but I will try to hit some of it. After high school I stayed in Klamath Falls long enough to train to become a hair stylist. I then moved to Monterey, Ca. where I have loved living for over 40 years. I was married then divorced while I was still very young. I had my own hair salon for many years where I met many people, some famous! After being single for a number of years I married the love of my life, Doctor Ted Stotler, M.D. We had a wonderful life together for many years traveling, entertaining, and enjoying our home and each others company before Ted passed away in 1993. I still love my life in beautiful Monterey. I stay very busy as an artist, decorator, and caterer. I will miss the class reunion again! However I will be thinking of all of you and would love to hear from you! I do hope to make it to the next class reunion! Linda Hanville Parashos After graduating in 1963, I left Klamath Falls to attend Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Portland, Oregon. After graduation I returned to K Falls for 10 short months to work at Merle West Medical Center. I missed "city" life in Portland so I moved back and began my 40 year employment with Kaiser Permanente. On April 1, 2008 I finally called it quits to a nursng career in the operating room as both a staff nurse and the nurse educator for the O.R. during the last six years. I have a husband, Bill, and one son John. Bill and I have been married for thirty-six years. I have no grandchildren at this time. We continue to live in the Portland/Gresham area. After Bill retires we plan to do some extensive traveling. In the meantime I am staying very busy doing vounteer work wth the Multnomah County Health Reserve Corp, taking "Do-It-Yourself" classes, and staying very busy with a multitude of miscellaneous projects. My goal is to continue to stay very healthy in order to live a long life, to continue to travel, to enjoy the outdoors, and to spend time with "old" and "new" friends and family. Thurston Henzel After graduation from high school I served a short time in the Army Reserves, then two years of college, worked in Klamath Falls for one year, lived and worked in Medford, Oregon for two years and got divorced. I went to work on the family farm ( Tulana Farms.) This was sold in 1976. My brother Sam and I started our farm ( Henzel Brothers.) I retired in 2006. Along the way, I married again and had two children, a boy and a girl. This ended in divorce. In 1989 I married my wife Judy. She retired from the local hospital after working twenty three years. I now live in Klamath Falls for six months and in Sun City West, Arizona for six months. Diana Hunsaker Bryant dngbryant@comcast.net After graduating from high school I attended OSU where I majored in elementary education. Shortly after graduating I married Tom Bryant. We lived in Corvallis for two years. I taught fourth grade in Albany while Tom finished his master’s degree. Because Tom had been in ROTC he had a two year commitment to the Army…which ended up being thirty years!!! Our daughters were born in 1970 and 1972. We lived in many different places both in the United States and Germany. We both retired in 2001 and moved to Vancouver, WA. Tom works for Vancouver School District. I keep busy doing volunteer work and pursuing my hobbies. I moved to Eugene and taught for 7 more years before we were blessed with our first child, Jeff. I decided to be a stay-at-home-mom, and 20 months later we were blessed with a beautiful daughter, Lisa. During the time the children were growing up I was very involved in the schools and volunteer work. When Jeff was in college and Lisa was getting ready to graduate from high school, I decided I needed to find something to keep me busy after they left home. I became a travel agent and now own my own travel company as travel is our passion. My husband and I also own Sunwest Honda, Mazda, Buick, Pontiac, and GMC in Newport, Oregon so that also keeps us busy. Both of my children are school teachers so I enjoy hearing of all their experiences. Both are married but no grandchildren yet, HOPEFULLY SOON!!!!! Mary W.
